Blackjack finally gets it right
I am not a fan of Jack McDowell's writing (well, actually I'm not a fan of his ideas), but I think he finally gotten something right
. I've previously voiced how I feel about Clemens showing up only 1 out of the 5 days the Astros play. Jack puts it forth perfectly:
Roy Oswalt, Tim Redding and Wade Miller could use a guy like Clemens around every day to help take their games to the next level – and not just the days they pitch. Sitting on a bench watching others throw can produce the best and most pertinent conversations between pitchers. You never know when Clemens might pass along that one tidbit that changes one of these guys' careers.
Houston definitely loves the wins that Clemens has brought to the table. But I bet the Astros wish their other starters were able to soak up more magic from him. That's the price of the star system. Hopefully others are paying attention to the Astros and their struggles amid high expectations, and they won't make the same mistake.
The Astros have been a mess all season. I don't know if Clemens' preferential treatment was a factor in all of it, but it certainly didn't help matters any.
